    JOB TITLE: Sensory Technician
    LOCATION: Comstock Brewery
    REPORTS TO: Sensory Specialist
    FLSA POSITION TYPE: Full-time, Hourly Non-Exempt
    EXTERNAL POSTING DATES: 12/18/2017-01/07/2018

    POSITION SUMMARY: This position is responsible for the collection of all sensory samples for daily panels and maintains cleanliness of Sensory Lab.

    ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: include the following.
    •Adheres to and advances the “Safety Always” culture of Bell’s Brewery.
    •Evaluates beer samples from an organoleptic perspective by participating in Bell’s Sensory Program.
    •Collects, prepares, and executes samples for Sensory Panel including pre and post package beer, raw materials, and various process water types.
    •Collects process water samples daily from brewhouses, bottling, kegging, and canning areas for the purpose of organoleptic evaluation.
    •Collects brewing raw materials, including malt, hops, honey, and other ingredients daily for the purpose of organoleptic evaluation.
    •Collects pre-package beer samples daily from Downtown Brewery and Comstock Brewery for purpose of organoleptic evaluation.
    •Prepares cups and samples for four daily sensory panels.
    •Collects materials necessary for conducting daily panels from various sources including but not limited to Downtown Retail Campus, Grocery Stores, and Comstock brewery.
    •Logs sample data in SensCheck Sensory Software daily for all sensory panels.
    •Prepares sugar solution for firkins according to the firkin packaging schedule.
    •Prepares beer samples for analysis via Anton Paar.
    •Collects, organizes, and maintains Sensory Sample Library inventory of thousands of bottles
    •Sets up and cleans up after daily panels.
    •Transports samples and supplies between Brewery locations.

    Additional duties may be assigned as necessary.

    •None

    QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.
    •Must possess a valid driver’s license in order to drive company vehicle
    •Must be 21 years or older in order to evaluate beer samples from an organoleptic method.

    •Company Vehicle
    •Computers

    IMPORTANT SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
    •Strong written and verbal communication skills and ability to effectively collaborate with diverse groups.
    •Must be organized and able to efficiently multi-task and prioritize.
    •Interpersonal skills sufficient to be comfortable working in a team environment with a great deal of interdepartmental coordination.
    •Strong computer skills (MS Office Suite, Access, LIMS).
    •An understanding of the critical role of cleaning and sanitation in the brewing process.
    •Ability to participate in the organoleptic assessment of beer.
    •Willingness to continuous learn and participate in the evaluation of samples

    THE IDEAL CANDIDATE WILL POSSESS:
    •High School diploma or equivalent
    •Proven experience in a highly detail oriented environment focused on quality
    •1-2 years of data entry experience required
    •Cicerone level 1 preferred, level 2 a plus
    •Experience in a lab environment, is a plus
    •Inventory experience utilizing FIFO principle
    •Demonstrated Craft Beer process and overall knowledge

    •While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally required to sit for long periods of time.
    •Ability to frequently stand, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl and climb.

    • Ability to frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 58 lbs.
    •Ability to frequently reach with hands and arms. Use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls.
    •Vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision and the ability to adjust focus.
    •Must be able to participate in critical assessment of beers.


    WORK ENVIRONMENT: The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job.
    •Work is primarily performed in a Laboratory setting, with frequent trips to operational area required.
    •The work environment is usually that of a brewery.
    •The noise level in certain parts of the brewery is occasionally loud (80-90 dB).
    •The employee works around high voltage, hot water, and steam.
    •The employee works with hazardous materials.
    •The employee works on wet floors and with wet equipment.
