    General Description
    Melvin Brewing is a craft brewery, based in Alpine, Wyoming. Melvin operates a 30-BBL brew house in a 20,000 square foot facility, where it kegs and packages highest-quality craft beer for key Pacific Northwest and Mountain States markets. We are based in the beautiful Rocky Mountains surrounded by 3 national forests, rivers, skiing, mountain biking and everything the outdoors has to offer.

    Job Overview

    The Laboratory Technician is a full-time position who is responsible for analytical and microbiological monitoring of the entire beer production process. This includes routine sampling, analytical testing, and sensory analysis of product and materials from the entire brewing process including water, wort, yeast, finished beer and packaged product. Prior experience in the QA/QC and/or sensory department in a brewery is desired.

    Qualifications or Skills Required:
    • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Science preferably Chemistry, Biology, Microbiology, or Food Science or equivalent work experience or training from an accredited institution.
    • Strong passion and knowledge for the craft beer industry.
    • Knowledge of basic laboratory techniques, procedures and instruments including microscopy, cell counting with a hemocytometer, spectrophotometry, and PCR.
    • The ability to safely handle reagents and other potentially hazardous chemicals.
    • Strong written and verbal communication skills and ability to effectively collaborate with diverse groups.
    • Must be organized and able to efficiently multi-task and prioritize.
    • Interpersonal skills sufficient to be comfortable working in a team environment with a great deal of interdepartmental coordination.
    • Skilled in Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
    • An understanding of the critical role of cleaning and sanitation in the brewing process.
    • Working knowledge of beer production process including brewing, cellaring, and packaging.

    Responsibilities include (but are not limited to):
    • Assist in development and execution of a robust sensory program.
    • Obtain samples from various points of the beer production process.
    • Sample preparation and analysis including centrifugation, filtration, and dilution.
    • Preparation of analytical standards execution of sample analysis by following laboratory Standard Operating Procedures to ensure accurate sampling, testing, and use of lab equipment and instruments.
    • Utilize sterile technique to obtain and process samples throughout the brewery.
    • Preparation of microbiological media, sterile plating, and microscopic analysis for microbial growth.
    • Ensures the laboratory is well-stocked and resourced.
    • Attends and participates in department and interdepartmental meetings as necessary.
    • Collaborates with colleagues to maintain lab beer inventory.
    • Helps to calibrate, maintain, and repair lab equipment to ensure instruments are operational and reliable.
    • Transports samples and supplies between brewery locations.
    • Ability and willingness to maintain flexible work schedules, as weekends and some holidays are necessary.
    • To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.
    • Additional duties may be assigned as necessary.

    Physical Requirements and Work Environment
    • Full mobility and physical capability to safely and effectively work in a brewery environment including:
    o Occasionally required to sit for long periods of time.
    o Ability to frequently sit, stand, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl and climb.
    o Ability to frequently talk, hear, and smell.
    o Manual manipulation of small parts and all equipment necessary to the job
    o Lifting up to 55 pounds to shoulder height repetitively
    o Working in often hot/wet/cold/humid conditions
    o Ability to walk up and down stairs throughout shift
    • This position is full time which will require a flexible schedule to cover 7 days a week which includes availability to work normal business hours, some weekends, holidays, and evening shifts.
    • Must be 21 years of age
