    Southern Tier Brewing Company, in operation since late 2002, has a state-of-the-art 110 BBL Steinecker brew system and a 12,000 BBL fermentation cellar and a fully automated Krones yeast management and CIP system. We are projecting to brew over 120K BBL in 2016.

    Job Description Summary:
    The Lead Quality Technician executes all daily quality duties in the areas of packaging, cellar, laboratory and sensory, ensuring the day-to-day operations of the lab are run according to the Quality SOPs. This ensures quality is a priority across the brewery. The Lead also manages lab inventory and waste disposal and provides guidance via research, trial, SOP creation and training of other Laboratory Technicians and other brewery staff when necessary.

    Minimum Education and/or Experience required:
    • Minimum two years of QA/QC experience, preferably in a production brewery (or an industry regulated by the FDA)
    • Bachelor’s Degree in Chemistry, Biology, Microbiology, Food Sciences, Fermentation or other directly related field
    • Sensory Panel Experience
    • Any prior experience with GMP, HACCP, ISO 9001, advanced degrees and/or a Brewing education will be considered a plus
    • Knowledge, Skills and Abilities the Lead Quality Technician Must Possess:
    • Chemistry, Biology or Food Science background
    • Knowledge of basic statistics
    • Safe Laboratory Operations and procedures. GLP experience is preferred
    • Ability to safely handle and work with reagents another potentially hazardous chemicals
    • An understanding of the critical role of sanitation in the brewing process
    • The ability to work well independently or as part of a team
    • Exceptional communication skills, both verbal and written. Must be able to confidently speak in public
    • Strong organizational skills
    • Ability to multitask
    • Strong work ethic and a high level of professionalism
    • Microsoft Office familiarity, particularly with Excel and Word
    • Any experience with Krones BOTEC software is a plus, as is a working knowledge of the brewing and packaging process


    Duties and Responsibilities:
    • Executes daily quality duties across the brewery according to the staff rotation plan, including rotating through any shift that needs support as necessary
    • Ensures that the daily operations of the lab are run according to the Quality SOPs and works with Quality Manager to continuously improve Quality SOPs; in particular, sample workflow and record keeping
    • Manages consumables and equipment inventory, ordering, recordkeeping and 5S practices in the laboratory area and other Quality workspaces throughout the campus
    • Helps coordinate proper disposal of all laboratory products- disposables and waste included
    • Assists with the development of the Quality Management System including writing and revision SOPs, and potentially, MBSs and Cellar Notes or other logs, specification data or CV charting and action plans
    • Assists with data analysis and record keeping and reporting, following the Controlled Document practice
    • Assists with capital improvement research and commissioning as necessary
    • Reviews Quality Records for completeness and accuracy
    • Handles small projects for Director of Brewing and Quality as they arise, including, but not limited to: trial batch testing, sample mailing, sensory-related sampling and testing, short-term experiment design, setup and data collection/analysis, etc.


    Physical Demands: The Lead Quality Technician must be able to:
    • Occasionally sit or stand for long periods of time
    • Frequently sit, stand, walk, bend over, twist, kneel, climb, stoop and crouch. This position requires the ability to routinely and repeatedly lift up to 55 pounds and maneuver 170 pounds repeatedly
    • Use their hands to perform fine manipulation, handle or feel, and must be able to reach with their hands and arms
    • Identify product deficiencies (color, smell, taste); this requires having close, distance, color and peripheral vision as well as depth perception and the ability to adjust focus
    • Safely and properly handle hazardous materials in various size quantities, and operate complex moving machinery


    Work Environment:
    The quality lead will primarily perform work duties in a laboratory, with frequent trips to the production and warehouse areas
    While performing the duties of the job, the Lead is regularly exposed to a damp, wet environment with hot liquids, airborne particles, chemicals and moving machinery. There can be loud noise levels, and protective eyewear is required on the production floor at all times.
