    Job Summary

    Barnstormer Brewing and Distilling Company is a brewpub and production brewery located in beautiful Barrie Ontario. We are growing rapidly and establishing a production facility to off load our brewpub location. We are looking for the right individual to join our team as a Head Brewer.

    Head Brewer

    The Barnstormer Brewing and Distilling Head Brewer is responsible for all aspects of the beer & spirits production process and day-to-day operations of the brewstillery. It is a exciting role, which can involve many different tasks including managing other brewers, interacting with QC/QA lab staff, packaging planning, making purchasing decisions, meeting with customers and other businesses, creating new types of beer or spirits, setting production schedules and managing resources.

    The Head Brewer should be highly experienced with the beer brewing process and is ultimately responsible for the quality of beers and spirits that a Barnstormer produces. They are usually involved with creative decisions including what kinds of beer to produce, where to source the best raw materials for that particular beer or spirit.
    Barnstormer is willing to accept candidates that do not have distilling experience and revise the role slightly.

    The successful applicant will have a positive attitude, previous brewing experience, a strong work ethic, and a drive for maintaining quality and efficiency. This is a full-time position, and compensation will be competitive with local industry standards.

    Employee will be eligible to participate in our Employee Stock Ownership Program.

    Job: Full-time - working location Barrie Ontario area (two locations)

    About Barnstormer Brewing and Distilling:

    Barnstormer Brewing and Distilling Company is a brewpub and production brewery located in beautiful Barrie Ontario. Barnstormer was founded in 2013 and has grown steadily since from a brew pub model to a brew pub and production brewery model servicing over 260 LCBO, TBS, and Grocery locations with award winning beer and spirits. We are currently expanding our restaurant operations and establishing a production brewing facility to further service the Ontario market and others.

    Personal Requirements:

    We’re looking for an experienced brewer with:
    • Minimum of 5 years of brewing experience, age 28 or older
    • Experience with batch sizes of ~30hl or larger
    • Formal brewing education or a great experiential learning background
    • Ability to supervise subordinate staff, including, but not limited to, assignment of duties, evaluating service, appraising, and taking disciplinary action when necessary
    • Able to lift to 70lbs, climb stairs, climb ladders, sit, stand, and crouch
    • Forklift certified
    • G class drivers license
    • Able to work 44 hours week
    • Enjoys craft beer and craft spirits and can develop sound new products
    • An understanding of all brewing aspects including wort production, fermentation, cellaring, yeast handling, CIP, packaging, and logistics
    • Familiar with LCBO, TBS, and Grocery standards
    • Proficiency in use of Microsoft software



    Job Duties:
    • Establish and publish weekly production schedule and staff schedule (online portal used) while creating a positive team attitude that encourages accountability and high standards of beer / spirits production
    • Assist / perform all aspects of the brewing process wort production to shipment, perform same for distilling
    • Produce beer and spirits that is consistent, ensure daily fermentation pH/gravity checks; manage fermentation and yeast health, CIP and sanitizing fermenters and brite tank, to produce beer and spirits that are free from defects, and meets the style or recipe standard
    • Ensure completion of wort production, daily fermentation pH/gravity checks; manage fermentation and yeast health, CIP and sanitizing fermenters and brite tank are done in accordance with policies and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
    • Carry out and enforce proper housekeeping and organization standards across the entire brewery and storage
    • Maintain recipe updates for changes in incoming good specifications
    • Handle procurement of all raw materials, packaging, chemicals, etc by issuing purchase orders to applicable vendors (web based system used)
    • Maintain weekly inventory of all raw materials, packaging, and finished goods (web based system used)
    • Management of brewery keg float and turn over (web based system used)
    • Management of the brewery waste stream ensuring correct disposal or recycling
    • Maintain MSDS library for chemicals, store and handle chemicals in accordance
    • Drive safety initiatives as required throughout brewery, packaging, and storage
    • Carry out routine maintenance as personal ability allows
    • Contribute ideas to improve process, quality, and economics
    • Communicate on a weekly basis with brewpub restaurant and sales staff leadership the upcoming releases schedules and release notes for each product
    • On occasion lead a training class with the brewpub, restaurant, and or retail staff
    • Attend occasional beer festivals, beer dinners in brewpub, release parties, lead a customer facing tasting, etc
