    JOB TITLE: Safety Manager
    LOCATION: Brewery, Comstock, MI
    REPORTS TO: Director of Operations
    FLSA POSITION TYPE: Full Time, Salaried Exempt

    POSITION SUMMARY: The Safety Manager will lead all aspects of the Bell’s Brewery Safety Program and enact the vision and goals established by the Directors' team for company-wide safety efforts. The Safety Manager is also responsible for building employee commitment to a culture of safety in the workplace and ensuring that the organization complies with the applicable MIOSHA and industry standards.

    ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: include the following.
    •Adheres to and advances the “Safety Always” culture of Bell’s Brewery, Inc., and is accountable for the safety of their department.
    •Successfully builds rapport, respect and camaraderie, both inter- and intra-departmentally, through exceptional coaching, teambuilding and training.
    •Trains, mentors and develops department staff.
    •Works closely with Director of Operations and HR to address developing personnel concerns. Works with HR team to recruit, select and hire staff.
    •Leads meetings of direct reports to ensure effective communication throughout the department and company as a whole.
    •Leads and manages the Safety Programs at Bell’s Brewery and works with Operations, Hospitality and Administration to ensure proper safety protocols are in place and adhered to.
    •Oversees compliance with safety standards and regulations. Ensures Bell’s Brewery remains current on safety standards within the brewing industry.
    •Sustains and builds the safety training program including On-Boarding new employees, refresher training. Maintains documentation for every employee’s successful completion.
    •Serves as first point of contact with government agents, insurance carriers, and other inspectors or outside safety specialists focused on the workplace.
    •Attends and participates in Brewery Leadership meetings.
    •Oversees the development and upkeep of departmental Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
    •Is informed about, educates on, and implements industry best practices.
    •Calculates, authors, and regularly presents safety event data, KPI, and dashboards.
    •Assists leaders with the enforcement of safety rules. Brings non-compliant situations to the attention of leadership and, as necessary, advises on the appropriate level of discipline required.
    •Thoroughly investigates any accidents or near-miss situations that occur. Identifies the root cause of issues and ensures that appropriate corrective actions are taken.
    •Interacts with Bell’s Human Resources Department and Worker’s Compensation insurance company to return injured employees to work as quickly and safely as possible. Evaluates light-duty assignments and coordinates with the employee, physician, and Operations.
    •Coordinates safety activities with contractors and vendors, as appropriate, to ensure that their work meets expectations for safe work practices.
    •Inspects facilities and equipment on a routine basis to ensure that any unsafe items are identified and corrected in a timely manner.
    •Evaluates the design and installation of new equipment to ensure that it meets safety standards.
    •Ensures inventories and distribution of safety supplies; personal protection equipment, medicine cabinet and First Aid/AED supplies, as well as any additional equipment specific to safety programs or policies.
    •Evaluates the ergonomic impact of various job duties and recommends ways to reduce or eliminate repetitive motion and/or ergonomic issues.
    •Serves as the Radiation Officer in maintaining compliance on all relevant production equipment
    •Consistently exhibits company values in all interactions with associates and customers in a professional manner.
    •Flexible schedule. 24-hour, 7-day on-call status, required.

    Additional duties may be assigned as necessary.

    MANAGERIAL/LEADERSHIP RESPONSIBILITIES:
    •Three (3) direct reports (Brewery Safety Specialist, DRC Safety Coordinator, Safety Trainer)

    QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.
    •Must possess a valid driver’s license
    •Access to a personal vehicle.

    •Exceptional leadership skills.
    •Exceptionally strong written and verbal communication skills and be comfortable addressing diverse groups.
    •The ability to positively engage employees in support of safe work practices
    •Strong computer skills necessary to quickly learn Bells’ software systems.
    •Exceptional time management skills with a proven ability to plan, organize, and prioritize work load to balance multiple projects effectively.
    •An energetic, forward-thinking and creative individual with high ethical standards who will positively represent Bell’s Brewery both internally and externally.
    •A well-organized and self-directed individual who is a team player.
    •Outstanding attention to detail and the ability to manage multiple processes at one time.
    •Self-motivated with good time management skills.
    •Strong problem solving and analysis skills.
    •The ability to safely handle potentially hazardous chemicals & train others in safe practices.
    •Interpersonal skills sufficient to be comfortable leading in a team environment with a great deal of interdepartmental coordination.

    THE IDEAL CANDIDATE WILL POSSESS:
    •Bachelor’s degree in Safety Management, Industrial Engineering, a related field, or comparable work experience.
    •5-7 years’ experience, preferably at both the plant level and multi-site settings.
    •Previous leadership or management experience.
    •Extensive knowledge of OSHA and MIOSHA regulations and their application.
    •An exceptional ability to assess risk and make intelligent recommendations on safety improvements
    •A mindset that an incident-free environment is not only possible, but is the expectation
    •Sound judgment in all aspects of the position
    •Experience in a production environment with a comprehensive understanding of lock-out/tag-out and other core safety issues.
    •Brewing or other beverage manufacturing experience preferred.
    •Knowledge of brewing processes
    •CSP and /or CIH Certification

    •Must be able to lift, push, and pull up to 25lbs on a regular basis.
    •Vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision and the ability to adjust focus.
    •The ability to travel via car or airplane on a regular basis.
    •Must be able to participate in organoleptic assessment of beers.

    WORK ENVIRONMENT: The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job.
    •Work is primarily performed in an office environment with frequent trips to operational areas required.
    •The work environment is that of a brewing and packaging facility.
    •The employee frequently must work in a sanitary environment.
    •The noise level in the packaging facilities is frequently loud (90+ dB).
    •The employee regularly works around high voltage, flame, hot water, and steam.
    •The employee comes in contact with and has to handle broken glass.
    •The employee handles hazardous materials.
    •The employee works near moving mechanical parts.
    •The employee works on wet floors and with wet equipment.
    •The employee may occasionally enter a confined space.
