  • Looking for long probe thermometer for mash run readings from top of tun

Our 20bbl mash tun has a temp probe down low and we have found that it gives sporadic questionable readings - maybe due to being in a poorly mixed spot. We are looking to add a reliable digital thermometer with a long enough probe for us to check various spots/depths in our mash. Does anyone have one they would suggest? We have been using an analog compost thermometer as a backup but we don't find it to be all that accurate when we test it against our trusted mercury glass thermometer.

    Thanks!

You can order a thermocouple and customized probe from Omega.com. I purchased on through the Canadian arm, omega.ca, Thermocouple was a under $200 and the probe under $100. We have had some issues with it sporadically giving wonky readings and are working with Omega to sort it out (possibly a short in the probe).

Look at the two on the bottom of the page. These come with probes from 24-86". We use the bimetal one, and calibrate it weekly.

You could try ThermoWorks thermometers. https://www.thermoworks.com/Handheld-Probes

When calibrating a long probe thermometer - how much has to be in the sample liquid? Am I able to get a pint glass sized liquid and put 4-5in of the long probe in along with a trusted mercury thermometer to calibrate?

The sensor is in the tip of the probe. Theoretically, only a few inches need be immersed, but we use a 5 gallon bucket to be sure. To keep the water temperature uniform, we put the bucket on a magnetic stirrer--just be careful with the bulb of your MIG thermo.
