  • Transfer from 1st floor kettle to basement fermenter

I'm purchasing a building that is currently a restaurant. We want to use the hood in the kitchen for the brewhouse, then transfer the beer to the basement to ferment. We have lots of room down there for everything else. I will be using a 3bbl stout setup.

What is the best approach to transfer the wort? We are getting a bid and the plumber suggested copper plumbing. Would I even need a pump or could I just gravity feed it to the fermenter from the chiller? If anyone has done this I would appreciate any advice I can get.

    Thanks,
    Martin

You need stainless, not copper. I don't think you'd need to use a pump to transfer the wort, but make sure you have a plan in place to clean it.

I worked in a brewpub with just such a setup back in 2004 (now sadly closed). You need two racking pipes so that you can circulate your caustic and acid cleaning cycles.

And BrewerJake is correct about stainless.

      Good luck,
      Barbara
