  • Origin of the word "Growler"

I'm stumped... Does anyone know where this word came from? I have had many customers ask me over the years, and i have asked many people within the industry, and nobody i have found seems to know.

I've read in more than one place that the term comes from the recipient growling when there was too much head or not enough beer from the sloshing that comes with children running the streets with these buckets. Hard to imagine that scene in a big American city today!

I'm not sure how common the other meaning is in the US, but in (esp Northern?) England the term means the female genitalia in impolite society
The phrase "Eh love - show us yer growler!" might be shouted in the street by a particularly uncouth youth.
