  • Phosphoric acid and copper pipes

We use phosphoric acid to adjust the ph of the water in our HLT to about 6.
We then recirculate the water in our HLT using a pump and a copper water pipe that runs the length of the tank.

Will the acid cause the copper to corrode over time? would it be possible for the water to taste metallic after a while?

    comments?

    Thanks,
    Charles

    No. Dilute it before contact.

thanks. we put some acid directly into the water tank and then recirc for 10 min or so to properly mix. So if I understand correctly, our copper piping shouldn't be affected at all?

Mix the acid with water before adding. (OSHA would appreciate using safety glasses.) Then add to tank, or even just add very gradually. If the acid were to pour straight on the copper, it would have some reaction.
I believe the yeast would likely scavenge the bulk of the copper anyway.
Yes, then you will be fine.
