  • How big is yours?

my second question which i should of had with the first is. what is the average water line coming in to the brew house on a 7-14 bbl system. I think the building we are looking at has a garden hose at present.

    Cheers!

Water line size has been covered in other threads, try searching for them. The rule of thumb is to size your water line based on the peak need. The peak need is typically during knockout. Knockout water requirements are to cool 14 barrels of beer with 1.2 * 14 bbl cool water in 30 minutes or 45 minutes or 60 minutes. Pick your variables and plug them in. Then establish a back pressure on the heat exchanger. This will be in the range of 5-10 psi. Then add the static head to pump into your HLT (how tall is it?). This is typically in the range of 4 psi. Add it together to specify you need x gallons per minute delivered against a back pressure of y psi. Even a large water line size may not deliver enough water if there is no pressure behind it. You'll probably find that you need a nominal 1" pipe. Good luck.

We have a 1 1/4" for a 15 bbl system - works great. As Gitchegumee pointed out, there are many variables based on locations/systems, such as water pressure, temperature, heatex, etc. Note that in many locations (and times of year) your water temperature may not be sufficient to cool by itself and you might need to plan for a cold liquor tank or a 2-stage water/glycol heatex.

Our 10bbl system has 1" water pipes. We also have a 13bbl cold liquor tank for cooling.

We had a poly tank that was originally in the cold room so we wrapped it in Wirsbo PEX tubing and then spray foamed it. It was ugly so we made a cover for it.
