  • dextrosa use

I have some dextrose which I have never used before.
I would like to hear from anyone who has.
I would be using it just to increase my OG for a higher gravity beer.
    Any info. would be appreciated.
    Cheers

    Dextrose Use

I have used dextrose and other sugars to increase the gravity of my beers. I like to add it the last 10 to 15 minutes of the boil. You will need to make sure you have a good boil going because it will drop the temperature upon addition. On my system the kettle serves as the mash tun and therefore has a mash mixer in it, so I run the mash mixer during the addition to make sure that the sugar doesn't all sink to the bottom and burn on the bottom of the kettle. If you do not have a mixer in the kettle I would suggest stirring the wort before addition or maybe running the whirlpool to get it spinning before the addition.

I have added up to 50 lbs. of sugar in a 10 bbl. batch and 40 lbs. in a 7 bbl batch of barleywine with little effect on the yeast performance.
