  • Using fresh hop cones

I have a farmer in central PA who is a Certified Organic farmer who has 6 year old cascade hop vines who is very interested in GIVING me some of these hops. And to get to my real question has any body worked with fresh hops sans hopback? I have only worked with dried leaf hops and a hopback. I have heard of people using there lauter as a hopback but my system prohibits this as I have monoblock system with multi-purpose vessels. Would a nylon sack be the way to go or will they just float on top and not achieve maximum extract? Any suggestions would greatly appreciated!

Ive heard of people weighing the hop bag down with steel balls or marbles.

Stainless Steel pieces in the sack will help hold them down, but give ample room for the hops to move around in there. More bags w/ less hops works better than over loading one bag.
