  • Shredding Pump Head Seals

I've got a transfer pump that is shredding interior seals like nobody's business. The Teflon ring inside seems to be wearing right through leaving no shoulder left and then shredding the small pliable seal inside. This leads to beer/chems leaking out the back of the pump head, or the pump sucking air (aak!).

I'd like to get this licked - anyone have any ideas?

What kind of pump is it? We used to have a Thomsen pump that had this problem. Check the back wear plate. If it is scored and worn, you can take it out to a machine shop to have it turned back down flat. Then the ceramic seals will last a lot longer.

Motor bearing failure or bent pump shaft making pump shaft wobble?

        Linus,
Where do I get these miracle ceramic seals you speak of?

Why oh why did I poke the sleeping bear? They weren't leaking before, I just figured if I was replacing one...

I got them from Thomsen. It's just a ceramic ring pressed by a spring against the back plate, and when the plate gets scored it wears out the ceramic ring pretty quickly. We just took the back plate off and had a local machine shop turn it down flat again, and that helped.
