  • Activated carbon in sand filters

I'm curious what size sand filters folks are using to filter water for small (under 20 bbl) breweries and how much coconut shell (or other) carbon you're putting in them. Phil?

Ours is a Pentair Triton TR-40 rated for 38 gallons/minute. I'm sure this would be adequate for 20bbl system. Just recently changed carbon for the first time in four years--and not because we had to. Chlorine loading here is typically in the neighborhood of 1+ ppm. We use 55 pound poly bag of Granulated Activated Carbon Charcoal, 12x30 mesh, Coconut shell, acid washed. Very satisfied with our water treatment. Hope this helps.

Thanks, that's the info I was looking for. Do you put a base of sand or gravel down, or are you filling the body of the filter with straight charcoal? Recommendations for a good source in the US.

NO sand. Don't need it with good prefiltration of ~5 micron and a post carbon filtration of ~1 micron. Sand is used as a depth filter in swimming pools, etc. Your water source should be relatively clean and won't require depth filtration. Regarding sources, google it. I found buyactivatedcharcoal.com, but there are dozens of water specialists that sell this stuff.
