  • Zink in Waste water

I just got our first quarterly waste water test results back and it had high levels of zink. The sample was taken during a keg cleaning cycle using PBW. There had also been some yeast dumping in the day previous....

Any idea why I'd have high zink levels?

    Zinc in Effluent

The heavy metals content of the Brewery waste water is normally limited, but in recent years more and more attention has been foccussed on that issue, due to more stringend effluen requirements, and due to the quality requirements for sludge generated in Brewery waste water treatment plants. The latter is due to the economical advantages obtainable where the effluent plant is able to use the sludge as a fertilizer on farmland. For this to be permitted, the content of heavy metals must meet increasingly strict requirements.

Heavy metals have been attributed to many sources, such as glue, labels, and wear of conveyer belts. The sources however are many, and will vary for each of the different metals.
