  • Logo Design Competition

    Hey fellow brewers!

I'm not sure if anyone out there has come across this site yet, but Hatchwise.com is a website we have found where you can host creative design competitions.

We've started a competition for designers to compete in designing a new logo for our "fledgling" brewery. Check it out: http://www.hatchwise.com/contest_det...testid=257286#

And if anyone knows someone with graphic design talents, have them submit an entry, they could win $200!!!

    Cheers everyone!

    Logo Update

    Hey brewers!

So far we have 9 entries and the logo competition has only been going for less than 48 hours. Any chance we can get some of you to check out the logos and give us some feed back. We've posted some comments to the designers for improvements (unfortunately only the contest holder can comment on the site). But we'd love some feed back from all of you who have gone through the logo design process already.

Here's the link to the competition:

    Cheers!

I like Entry #300738 by: strophonic It is original and has a nice aesthetic.

The others look like amateur art students did them with stock art. But hey... that's my opinion which is what you asked for.

        Best of luck

          Completely Agree

You are absolutely right Matthew, and I'm agreeing with you that your pick is also my favorite and the designer changed just a few things it is the clear cut favorite as of right now.

Something made from clip art is definitely not our objective

You definitely get what you pay for. Competitions sound like a great way to get cheap branding, but really, it is way too important to leave to the amateurs. Find a good freelance Graphic Designer and you will be amazed at the difference. It might cost you a couple thousand, but worth it.

I am thinking of having a contest to select a plumber for my brewery.

                I H8

Unfortunately a couple thousand dollars for such a project would have serious consequences on other parts of our start up.

As I'm sure we are all aware these days access to credit is slim even for those of us with success in the business world, even for those of us like myself who have worked in finance and marketing for over 1o years.

So hopefully this competition will get us a fairly cost effective logo.

                  Investing in your brand

There has been a fair amount of discussion on this topic in my world lately and this is where we are...

Being in the planning and money searching phase, I get what you mean about choosing your spending wisely. that is why I am choosing a Branding Identity firm to get me where I want to go with my brand. I plan to take my 'reputation' and this new brand to potential investors and partners. I want them and me to be so amazed by our logos and such!

YES, it is expensive, but honestly it is about 1.2% of our entire startup cost. that is NOTHING! In fact, from research most beverage companies that actually manufacture their own products, spend closer to 10-20% of their startup on branding and associated costs. I know I know... the craft beer business is different, but for my investment and energy, we are taking the steps to create a brand that will match the quality of our beers. For my money I have chosen this route.

I hope your choice works well for you and your company.
                  Best of luck!
                  Matthew

We had a $500 contest through crowdspring.com (same idea) and we were very happy with the quality of most of the entries and are using the winner's entry for the foreseeable future. $200 might be a bit low to bring out the serious artists since they have to invest time with no certainty of getting paid at all. For a low budget startup I think it's a good first option if you don't have a clear idea of what you want already since you get a wide range of creative perspectives. If you are spending 7 figures on a regional brewery I would certainly expect to spend thousands on branding, but it certainly wasn't within our budget.

                        Contest

I get what you are saying about tight credit and trying save money. Just keep in mind that a logo defines your beer to those who have never tasted it. A bad logo equals bad beer in their minds. A good logo on bad beer will get people to try it. Then all you have to worry about is making good beer.

Good luck. I hope it works out for you.

                          Thanks for the input

We really do get what you're all saying so don't think for a moment that we're doing this just to get a cheap logo, our thought is that this might be a way to get a pretty good logo from a young designer for a cost effective price. Actually it's really been getting competitive, currently we have over 100 designs submitted by 15 designers and as it enters the last 5 days the competition is clearly getting better and more heated.

                            The winning logo

Well there were many good logos that we were able to choose from, but we decided on this simple but stark logo. Hope you like it and I would definitely recommend this website, hatchwise.com, for logo design. They also have different design competions (website, banners, t-shirts) that you can use.

Overall it's been a very positive experience for us.
