  • Mash staff/paddle

Well, our traditional wooden mash staff finally snapped in two after 16+ years of service. I'm off to pick up a canoe paddle or something to get us by, but we would like to find a more traditional wooden one for long term, 5-6' long. Stainless will work if we can't find a wooden one. Anyone got any leads?

    Cheers,

I've always used a big wooden canoe paddle. Any good sporting goods store should have them.

      No urethane!

I buy unfinished wooden oars for about $30 from Jamestown Distrubutors. It has gotten a little shredded so I'm looking for a better supplier but, it has lasted about a year now.

Please avoid the paddles/oars that are coated for water resistance. These coatings will wear off and get into your beer!

Has anyone here ever bought a paddle from http://www.mashpaddle.com/ not sure if it's big enough for a full sized mash tun, say 15 bbls. Anyone? They're 65.00$ but not sure if it's worth it.

After snapping three wooden canoe paddles I switched to an aluminum/urethane paddle and drilled a few holes in it with a hole saw. This one has lasted several years. Easier to clean and non porous.

            3 feet?

Pompeiisneaks- Mashpaddle.com's paddles are only 36" overall.

I stir a 15bbl mash tun with a 7 ft oar and it's barely tall enough. I would have to get in the mash to stir with one of those...

Porter, thanks, makes sense. He hand fabricates them, I'll maybe ask if he can do one that long.
