Here's some current research on hermetic bags for grain storage. In this case, the lack of oxygen inhibited the weevils from utilizing water, and the weevils died from thirst.

A better grain storage method/concept?

Hermetically sealing would be fine for malt, which is no longer alive, but long term storage of barley would suffocate the embryo as well as the weevils (if the lack of water didn't get them first), so it would not malt after a fairly short storage period. A maltster would probably have a better idea ofhow long barley could survive under these conditions.dick
