  • Brewer at West Sixth Brewing in Lexington, KY

    About West Sixth:
West Sixth Brewing is Lexington’s newest craft brewery. We believe Lexington is long overdue for more high quality craft beer, and hope to fill that need through our production brewery and taproom. We focus on producing the highest quality, fresh, delicious craft beer, and sharing it with others by distributing it to other restaurants and bars throughout Kentucky. We are also the first brewery to can its beer in Kentucky and are distributing cans of our “West Sixth IPA” to stores throughout the Commonwealth. Finally, we also operate a taproom at our production facility, located in the Bread Box at 501 West Sixth Street.

We also believe that businesses should be measured not only by their financial success but also by the good their do for their community. Each decision we make, we weigh not only how it will affect the business, but also how it can better the community that we live in. From our choices to focus on green design inside the tap room, to our selection of cans for distributing out beer, to our commitment to give 6% of all net profits back to other community organizations, we try to live our values in every decision we make.

Oh yeah, and we also have a lot of fun while doing it!

    About the Position:
West Sixth Brewing is looking to hire a full-time position in the brewery – a brewer who will wear many different hats.

From the beginning, Robin Sither, a founder of West Sixth, has been responsible for not only brewing all of our great beers, but also all of our cellaring, QA/QC, recipe development, and every other aspect of the production process. But since we’ve recently doubled our capacity, we’re looking to add another talented brewer to our team. Like Robin, this person will be responsible for many different hats, so, for this hire, we’re looking for someone who has experience working in a brewery.

While we’re looking for experience and talent, we’re also looking for this person to be someone who has interest in helping to grow West Sixth long-term. This opportunity will be great for someone who wants to be a part of what will (hopefully!) eventually become a larger brewing team, so we’re looking for someone who can eventually manage other brewers, participate in future hiring, and be a key member of our team.

Compensation will be dependent on experience, and may include overall profit-sharing.

    Day to day activities include:
    • Production of wort
    • Management of fermentation
    • Cellaring
    • Packaging (kegs and cans)
    • Cleaning the brewery
    • Recipe development
    • Growth and capacity planning
    • Scheduling future brews
    • Raw materials tracking and handling
    • Shipping and receiving
    • Representing the brewery at events and festivals
    • Other duties as needed

    Requirements:
    • Ability to work in a flexible and fast-paced environment without losing precision or attention to detail
    • Positive and results-oriented attitude
    • Strong communication skills
    • Ability to work independently and within a team
    • Flexible schedule, including the ability to work throughout week to include some nights and weekends. Our schedule changes weekly, so flexibility is key.
    • Desire to learn and a willingness to be taught
    • Excited about Craft beer.
    • Ability to lift and move up to 75 pounds
    • Ability to drive a Forklift
    • Understanding of proper chemical handling
    • Ability to work in a challenging physical environment, including heat, cold, and wet conditions
    • Willingness / ability to work safely with chemicals.
    • Minimum 1 year production brewery experience.
    • Technical knowledge of all aspects of the brewing process.

This is a full-time position located in Lexington, KY.

Interested candidates should email a resume and cover letter to: jobs (at) westsixth.com

Cant help you with your brewing position. However if you are looking for any part time help or volunteers I would love to get some experience. I am a long time home brewer and full time mechanical engineer. I have designed and built several all electric pilot brew systems, that have gone on to serve in microbreweries in the Midwest. See attached pics. Let me know if there is any interest.
