  • Off-Centered Brewing Supervisor!

Dogfish Head Craft Brewery is seeking an off-centered leader to orchestrate the symphony that is Dogfish brewing. The successful candidate must be a triple threat: bringing outstanding people leadership, technical excellence, and off-centeredness in the form of amazing fit with our culture. In loose terms, you will be leading/coaching/guiding/developing our group of excellent co-workers. Some of your key duties include, supporting production scheduling, ensuring the highest quality from raw materials to package beer. You will be monitoring daily brewing operations while supporting all of the other departments that make up the awesome team at Dogfish. In the bigger picture, you will also think strategically and long-term to plan and ensure that there is adequate production available for sales that doesn’t compromise our safety or quality standards. This will include scheduling staffing, operating procedure development, systems utilization/maximization and so forth. You’ll model teamwork, collaboration, and open, honest, and healthy communication...it will not be enough for you to merely talk a good game, you gotta bring it. Remember that communication is a two-way street and listening to your folks is an important part of it! We perform a lot of off-centered brewing with, shall we say…”innovative techniques”, so collaboration with the rest of the staff will be crucial to your success! You must also be adept at the business end of the beer, in order to execute vetted, comprehensive budgets and hold you and your teams accountable. Yeah, you’ll be doing a lot (even more than this), but you know what, you’re going to love what you do, and the talented cast of characters that you’ll be doing it with.

What you Need to Land this Gig:

You should be a strong lead-by-example manager, who believes that your people’s successes are your greatest achievement. You’ll need 3+ years head brewer/supervisor experience in a packaging brewery. You’ll need to understand the balancing act between tank space management, yeast management, and brew scheduling. You should be a strategic and long-term thinker, who maintains a handle on today while planning and positioning for tomorrow. Your planning must accept maintenance as a part of the scheduling process, and you’ll need to have some experience with a preventative maintenance program. You must be flexible and adaptable in your approach and comfortable working in an environment where the goals are lofty, but the framework can be loose. You will have responsibility for 24/7 brewing or cellaring operations therefore a willingness to be available to your people during all of those hours is essential, this position will work first, second or third shift as the team and situations demand. We’re commissioning a lot of equipment over the next 2 years, so 9-5 work just won’t cut it! Our ideal candidate will possess a degree in Engineering or Life Sciences with a secondary education in Brewing Science. You’ve gotta have experience in all facets of the brewing operations. Lauter Tun and DE filtration experience is a plus, because that’s how we roll. You will need to know how to scale up a recipe from small scale to run in our (future) 200bbl brewhouse and get it right the first time. There are no second chances when you are only brewing a beer one time! And while you’ll be a supervisor, there will be times when you need to roll up your sleeves and get dirty. We’ll need you on the floor to help out and/or fill in when the situation presents itself. You also must know how to interpret and react to the data that our Quality Lab works hard every day to provide! You need to know the effects of microbiological activity in a brewery, and how to respond to it. You must have a good understanding of the basic engineering principles common in brewing. You’ll need to be able to read engineering drawings, PIDs, and be able to follow process flow paths in the CAD world as well as the real world. And you must be computer savvy and have some experience with process automation software including Excel. Craft brewery experience will likely set our hearts aflutter!
