  • PBST and GW Kent pros and cons

Looking to see who might have some positive and/or negative feedback on tanks from these 2 guys.
    Thanks,
    Billy

They both source from China. My PBST Kettle came with a leak! My gw kent brite tank hasn't had anything in it yet.

I've seen GW Kent's inventory first hand and it all looked to be very nice. He stressed that they source from better manufactures in China and it looked like it, considering what the welds looked like on my Kettle...

PBST is great if you like low-grade stainless that literally rusts when you try to pacify the tanks and pinhole leaks that cause you to dump 50 bbls of oxidized imperial ipa. I'm not bitter or anything....

I will add that PBST is addressing my issues.

GW Kent is always easy to get on the phone and there service has been great. Yah, they may be slightly higher on some things - but i've found that you get what you pay for.

PBST= plan on having a good stainless guy go over the whole thing to fix the poor welds and pinholes. Second the passivation problems. I wouldnt touch em if I had a choice. Also odd details like a 6" TC on the bottom of the brite with a pointless stand pipe that is much too high to be useful and unnecessary ports that all make cleaning more difficult.

Oh GREAT! That's the brite tank I have, guess i'll fill it with water to make sure it's tight.

Looks like the typical situation with suppliers, your results may vary... I haven't had a bad experience with GW Kent to date. There shipping is next day for me because of location so it's been very convenient to date.

Tanks and other GW Kents matters

For tanks, Silver State Stainless makes a solid and reliable unit. Good quality and heat transfer.
                They are based in Nevada.
We have a control panel made by GW Kent. Each controller is actually a PC card that slides into a slot in a large mainboard. Its poorly engineered, exhibits a high failure rate on the control modules, and Kent drags their feet on replacing the bad cards.
On the whole they are corporate and unimpressive. There are some other comments that would become very unsavory with respect to their operation.
The factory wiring diagram on this panel contains gross errors and is written in broken english.Output is DC only. Weak.

Here at Chuckanut we use a combination of DME and PBST tanks. The fermenters are about 80% PBSTwhich we have used from anywhere between 1-3 years. The brewhouse is DME. We have not had a major issue with any of the tanks. Yes, there have been minor issues, but this is to be expected with every fabricator. Across the US and abroad I have worked with essentially all the major fabricators with both small and large breweries. Some of the most name worthy ones I have had major issues with leaks, welds, and heat transfer issues so simply buying by name is not 100% reliable. We plan on expanding and using PBST tanks for continuing expansion. This is strictly based upon the positive results we have experienced.

Local brewery just had a 7 bbl uni from PBST show up with a paper plate size dent in the jacket. I was looking at the tank for our expansion, but after talking to the brewery owner about service I will not be using PBST for anything.

We just had 4 15bbl Fermenters from GW Kent delivered last Friday (not the cheaper Micro-fermenter version). It will be a few weeks until they are upright and operating, but they look pretty nice to me. I've seen some other imported tanks that sure don't look as nice of quality as these do, plus they were in stock.

Nothing but bad experiences with PBST

I don't want to get into it to much but I echo what everyone else is saying about the poor quality of PBST tanks as well as atrocious customer service. I do highly recommend Glacier Tanks though.
