  • Whirlpool hop aroma.

    I have a combined 4 BBL kettle/whirlpool.

Finding that I can't get what I would consider enough aroma from late/whirlpool hops.
Get bitterness as the hops sit in the hot wort but distinct lack of aroma.

I usually boil for an hour with a quarter of the hops then add the rest at the end of a 10 minute whirlpool.
Leave it for 20 minutes to settle then a half hour through chiller to fermenter.

    Any suggestions?

    Thanks

Possibly dumb question, but what hop are you using?

20 min resting and 30 min transfering is a long time if its still near 200 deg. imho

Yes, you may want to try adding them in the last few mins. of whirlpool w/ little or no rest for maximum aroma.

            Yeah it is.
What are your thought on whirlpool and rest times?

I could do a 5 minute full speed whirl and 10 minute rest.
Can maybe get the wort through the chiller faster also.

Was informed by the brewery consultant who put the kit in that a 15-20 min rest was important on this kit.
The whirl isn't great as there are 3 big electric elements in the vessel and the whirl inlet is just under half way up the side wall.

I could try 5 mins whirl and 5 mins rest.

              What do you do?

I usually add aroma hops in less than 5 minutes before end of whirlpool. No rest needed as my trub pile is pretty good. You could try a hopback to reduce the need to rest as well, since it would reduce the amount of material in the kettle itself. Just a thought.
