Hey guys, I'm in the market for a brewing system and in regards to the fermenters: I know the difference between jacketed and non jacketed, but I've seen a small company with a non jacketed with foam insulation wrapped around the outside of it. Does this actually work similar to a jacketed fermenter? If not why?

Indeed
Insulation only becomes a real factor when a space is being " conditioned " that is either heated or cooled.
All it does indeed is slow down the transfer of heat, and not for long in many cases.
There are many misconceptions about insulation somehow being able to prevent something from Temp. changes one way or another such as laypersons who misconceive that insulation will help pipes that are exposed to freezing temperatures if they are not heat traced with cable or supplied with another " BTU " source.
I once watched a guy put major heavy insulation into the attic of a shop that only had inadequate heat in the winter and evap cooling in the summer in South Carolina no less. There was no ventilation in that space. Our man could not accept the idea that that place was going to turn into a new inferno in the SC summer. It was a humidity nightmare, totally done wrong.Warren Turner
