  • used equipment inspection

Is there such a thing as an inspection service that can determin if used equipment is in good working order? If anyone knows of such a service, please share.

A reputable brewery consultant would probably be the best "Johnny-on-the-spot" if you're unable to travel and check it out in person, or are not comfortable with doing the inspection alone.

If you're willing to pay for it, a fabricator/provider of brewing equipment can offer you this service. Which one would depend on the level of mechanical engineering involved.

What type of equipment are you looking at?

If it's being purchased from a broker or used machine dealer it's often hard to get stuff powered up so that a proper evaluation can be done.

Process equipment, or stuff that is primarily electrical control related may be easier to evaluate by someone like an automation integrator. A company that does machinery repair for food or dairy equipment will be able to give you an evaluation as well.

More complex machinery like fillers or packaging machinery is hard to evaluate unless you can see it running. Most machinery manufacturers have a network of distributors or local technicians who would be the best resource.

You also need to factor in the price of what you are looking at vs. buying it from a dealer who will service it or new from the manufacturer. Your own capabilities to repair things then need to be considered.

As someone who has serviced and rebuilt a lot of machinery, unless the price is Reeeally good or you can see it running there is too much risk with complex mechanical machinery. If you can't evaluate it under power, the price has to be even better to consider it...
