  • WANTED: Brewpub Head Brewer - Brew History with Us in Old Town Alexandria, VA!

    Responsibilities: Management of 10 bbl brewpub brewery. Supervises all brewing, training of assistant brewers, sanitation and safety procedures, while promoting beer through marketing and restaurant functions. Develops and oversees brewing of recipes from the Craft Beer Test KitchenTM (CBTK) program. Overall maintains beer lineup of standard house beers, creative seasonal offerings and CBTK beers.

    ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
    Pre-opening Phase:
    • Assist with design and layout of the brew house
    • Formulate recipes and scale to 10 bbl brewery batch size
    • Brew pilot test batches of existing recipes and develop final formulas
    • Participate in pre-opening events and tastings
    • Evaluate and interview assistant brewer candidates
    • Initiate raw ingredient acquisition, hop contracts

    Operational Phase:
    • Production of house, seasonal and CBTK beers to Portner Brewhouse standards
    • Maintain brewery, TTB, inventory, brew sheet paperwork
    • Comply with all safety and health codes
    • Schedule brewery staff and delegate responsibilities
    • Attend weekly management meetings addressing brewery issues and production forecast
    • Operate brewery equipment to maintain acceptable inventory of raw materials and beer
    • Supervises cleanliness & sanitation of all equipment, tanks and work areas
    • Fundamental knowledge of plumbing and machinery mechanics/maintenance
    • Maintain working beer knowledge and tasting panel experience
    • Develop CBTK brewers and host brewdays involving guest brewers
    • Train assistant brewers and work at a level consistent with brewery production.
    • Research, technical and piloting specialties on an ongoing basis.
    • Train & test front of house staff in beer knowledge at daily meetings.
    • Participate in beer dinners and festivals, and other marketing/promotions/charitable events
    • Conduct brewery tours
    • Participate in Virginia Brewers Guild, Brewers Association and AHA


    QUALIFICATIONS:
    Knowledge, Skills, and Ability:

    • 2-5 years experience as a Head Brewer in a Brewery / Restaurant.
    • Ability to work and communicate well with staff, customers and outside parties, including Craft Beer Test Kitchen brewers
    • Competent with Microsoft office & basic computer functions.
    • Organized and detail oriented.
    • Ability to problem solve and get assistance as needed.
    • Capable of speaking in front of a small group of people as an instructor.

    Physical Requirements:
    Lift 55 lbs. from ground to shoulder high; Lift 110 lbs. from ground to waist high; Move 150 lbs. along the floor with flatbed hand truck; Climb stairs, ramps, and ladders; Work in small and confined spaces; Read, write and calculate basic algebra

    Education:
    High school diploma
    Homebrewing experience
    Technical Brewing School coursework a plus.

    Compensation: Salary is competitive and commensurate with experience. Benefits include health insurance, paid time off, 401K retirement plan and food and beverage discounts. The brewpub is closed to customers on Mondays for regular uninterrupted brewdays.

The company is inspired and influenced by The Robert Portner Brewing Company, the largest pre-Prohibition brewery in the South-eastern United States operating there from 1869 – 1916. The company strives to celebrate and foster the pursuit of the American Dream by showcasing the history and achievements of the Robert Portner Brewing Company and supporting aspiring brewers through its Craft Beer Test KitchenTM . This unique program offers craft beer brewers at all stages the opportunity to gain experience on a commercial brewing system and receive direct customer feedback using their own original recipe brewed and served at the Alexandria, VA brewpub. All information collected is compiled for the brewer into a comprehensive market report. Set against the backdrop of classic and contemporary German-American cuisine, comfortable atmosphere adorned with original Portner artifacts (i.e. beer bottles, steins, advertising posters) and opportunity to enjoy original reconstructed beer recipes from the Robert Portner Brewing Company beers year round.
