What's the difference between type 90 and type 45 pellet?

  • #2
Hopunion USA - The difference between type 90 and type 45 pellet

The names come from the final product. It is a little different here in the US, but in Germany a processor expects to get 90 lbs from every 100 lbs of whole hops for a type 90 pellet and 45 lbs from every 100 lbs in a type 45 pellet. What they have done in a 45 pellet is separate about 1/2 of the vegetative matter and in essence double the alpha in a pellet.
    The process:
The typical type 90 pellet process – One thing you’ll want to keep in mind is the main enemy to good hop flavor is heat. A pellet plant creates friction, which is heat. The goal is to keep the hop material cool as possible during the entire process. We do this by keeping the bales in the cold store until needed and also bring in outside cold air during the initial stages. A nitrogen cooling system is used during the compression stage and refrigeration is blown onto the finished pellets before they are boxed.

The type 45 pellet process - Basically a type 45 process works similar to the type 90 except in the beginning stages. Here the hops are deep frozen and put into a basic centrifuge system that separates the Lupulin for the rest of the vegetative matter. This works fine for lower alpha aroma hops, but does not work well for higher alpha varieties.
