    About the Opportunity

    Ingredients To Be A Successful Assistant Brewing Manager

    Responsible for in-specification performance of all product streams at Boston Beer. The Boston Beer Company brewing process consists of a challenging all-malt beer production that includes over 54 distinct styles of beer using both very traditional, but also some very unique, state-of-the-art brewing processes. Key role in collaborative Brewing with input into recipe development, ingredient selection, employee training, and capital projects. Partner with all Boston Beer functional leaders in 5S and other GMP initiatives. Recommends and/or selects equipment and improvements in manufacturing methods. Also responsible for supporting the development and maintenance of a system to assure that all brewing product manufactured by the Brewery meets customer specifications and achieve superior quality and reliability levels.

    Responsibilities:

    •Manage process and formulation of Boston Beer Company products to ensure adherence to specification and performance targets.
    •Ensures top quality process outputs including quick detection and root cause analysis of deviations or process variability.
    •Leads all aspects of staffing associated with the process to include safety, training, scheduling, and performance.
    •Recruit, hire, supervise and review performance of direct reports; develop staff professionally and technically to meet goals.
    •Manages/conducts quality checks, process audits, and monitors production reports to ensure adherence to BBC quality standard and performance.
    •Perform plant audit to ensure consistency/repeatability and help facilitate flavor agreement across the multi-plant system, audits to include process, formulation, and sanitation practices.
    •Monitoring of QA data and reporting and amends/adjusts process and formulation as needed for specification adherence.
    •Participates in daily taste panel to evaluate adherence to quality specification and flavor agreement.
    •Manages local supplier relations. Assist with selection and specification for raw materials, such as malt, hops, spices, and process aids.
    •Responsible for handling brewery orientation’s including presentations consisting of the entire brewing process, beer styles, QA responsibilities, Draft Quality, and off Flavor training.
    •Coordinates brewing, quality and operations efforts to ensure timely procurement of raw materials for year-round beers, seasonal and specialty products.
    •Provide timely update of process and formulation, materials utilization, etc. to Boston Beer Company finance contact.
    •Work with legal department regarding new products to ensure compliance.
    •Manage an effective safety program, assure all employees are fully trained and continually monitor employees to verify that all safety policies and procedures are in compliance.
    •Manage sanitation of area of responsibility to assure compliance with GMP’s.
    •Support a high performance team environment through highly motivated, engaged brewers.
    •Fosters a climate of continuous improvement in the Brewing process and department operations.
    To Be Mixed With:

    Qualifications:

    •B.S. /M.S. in Brewing Science, Fermentation Science, Food Science and Technology, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Biology/Microbiology.
    •Minimum 7 years professional brewing and leadership experience. Prior multi-site experiences a plus.
    •Proven experience in managing salaried and hourly staff.
    •Proven operations knowledge of all brewing process segments.
    •Proven ability to prioritize, make knowledgeable, quick decisions in a fast-paced environment.
    •Competence in using Microsoft Office, including MS Work, MS Excel, and MS Access.
    •Working knowledge of HACCP, GMP’s, Process Improvement and Process Control.
