  • Boiler Advice

We are looking at a 30 HP Hurst vertical boiler and a Columbia MPH-30. Anyone have an opinion? They are about the same price. The Hurst is build here in GA.

    Thanks

    Hurst Vertical

I had a 100 PSI Hurst at another facility in the past. This was a packaged unit with condensate return tank and pump all in one.
The boiler is ok, but the condensate return package in this case was weak.
Modulating fire is a good idea.
You will typically see double check valves on the discharge side of the return pump.
These are prone to constant failure which results in steam cavitation of the return water pump and of course your system shutting down.
I always prefer building up a system with better engineering in mind.
Every boiler on that former facility was set up with a steam rated pneumatic control valve on the return water system.
This gives you a definite positive shut off on the return pump discharge to the boiler. They are very reliable in comparison.
When possible I always spec Scotch Marine type fire tube boiler and a high quality " duplex " return system with independent motor starters on the pumps and the capability to service one pump while still running.. Weinman makes a nice one.
