  • Boiler Sizing for 15bbl brewhouse/30bbl HLT

We're having some difficulty figuring out what we need for a boiler. The brewhouse manufacturer I spoke with told me 1.8million BTU for a 15bbl kettle and 30 bbl HLT... (we will not be using steam for any purpose other than HLT and kettle) I was told by a boiler guy that a 1.8millon BTU boiler is going to be about 50hp. 50hp sounds like a little much for a 15bbl brewhouse, doesn't it? What hp are others using with similar sized systems? Thoughts? Opinions?

Thanks, noodle, that is closer in line to what I was expecting. At what point during runoff do you turn steam on to your kettle and how long does it take you to reach full boil? Are you brewing back to back and/or using HLT water for any purpose other than brewing? If so, do you ever have to wait for HLT to reach temp?

        Don't know yet

We are in the middle of installing our system so I can't give you any input yet. Sorry.
