  • Inexpensive Glycol Source

I've been sourcing propylene glycol for my new 10bbl brewery. I found a source called "Bulk Apothecary" but the prices are low to the point, where I'm timid about purchasing...

Has anyone dealt with this company? Here, it's being sold as a food additive, but it's the same thing, right? 90 bucks for 40 gallons just seems off the wall cheap compared to the ~700 bucks I've seen for 50 gallons elsewhere. It's not all lost in shipping either - 2 drums cost 67 bucks total ground shipping, for about 248 bucks for 100 gallons, shipped.

    Am I missing something?

EDIT Just realized it's listed in POUNDS not GALLONS (who sells glycol in pounds - sheesh!). In any case, it's 600 ish for 55 gallons, which is much more on par with what I've seen - though still on the lower side, which is nice.

You're missing corrosion inhibitors present in most commercial glycol for cooling purposes. You'll want this.

Agree 100% with Liam, look at purchasing with inhibitors. I wouldn't go cheap as lower quality can lead to serious issues down the road including gummed up evaporators and short service life.

        Some brands I'd recommend are:

        Dowfrost Univar
        Safe-T-Therm Houghton Chemical

shameless plug of what we offer- ProChill Heat Transfer Fluid
        We offer in:
5 Gallon Carboy undiluted is $125 with free shipment anywhere in the continental US
55 gallon Drums undiluted is $885 with free shipment anywhere in the continental US
can be order from our webstore here: http://www.prochillerparts.com/index...lt/?q=prochill

Careful as some will offer the solution pre-diluted solution, make sure you are comparing apples to apples. Would also recommend purchasing a refractometer and check concentration freezepoint monthly.

        Good Luck,
