    COMPANY DESCRIPTION:

Beer Engineers is a craft brewery located in Birmingham, Alabama, which is transitioning from contract brewing to production brewing. Our beers are largely unique variations on traditional styles. Beer Engineers has a passionate and established customer base for its flagship product, Peanut Butter Porter, and our other styles are expected to follow Peanut Butter Porter’s popularity. Our production brewery will also incorporate a taproom which will serve food, and we plan to regularly serve experimental, one-off beers in the taproom. We’re looking for an experienced, creative, and passionate brewer to serve as Brewmaster in our new facility.

    RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Brewmaster will be responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operations of Beer Engineers’ brewhouse and cellar. The Brewmaster will be responsible for ensuring both quality and consistency in producing Beer Engineers’ products. The Brewmaster will select ingredients and procure supplies for the brewhouse and will be responsible for developing brewing and purchasing schedules. The Brewmaster will also have some degree of responsibility for preventative maintenance and safety protocols . The Brewmaster will also be responsible for supervising brewery staff and for personnel decisions with respect to brewery staff.

The Brewmaster shares responsibility for creating new styles. We expect the Brewmaster to share our dedication to producing unique beers, and this will necessarily require the Brewmaster to develop creative recipes for those beers. The Brewmaster will also coordinate any new styles produced for taproom consumption with the taproom chef, ensuring that those new styles are paired appropriately with taproom food.

As a key employee of Beer Engineers, the Brewmaster will share marketing duties, as all staff are responsible for being brand ambassadors.

    And other duties as needed.

    QUALIFICATIONS:

The successful candidate should possess the following qualifications:

    * You should have at least three years’ experience in a production brewery with at least a 15 BBL capacity. This should include a solid working knowledge of brewery operations: packaging, quality control, loss prevention, preventative maintenance, ingredients, and inventory. You should also be familiar with the sanitation requirements of a brewery and should be able both to prevent and respond to microbiological activity. While we may take homebrewing experience into account in assessing your creativity, it is not a substitute for the required brewery experience.

    * Exceptional working knowledge of the process of brewing beer. You should be able not only to create recognized styles but to use innovative ingredients, techniques, processes, and combinations to create unique beers. You should be able to consistently turn quality raw materials into quality beer and to scale recipes up from small batches to any larger quantity.

    * Strong and demonstrated leadership and interpersonal communication skills. You’ll be the head of a team, so the ability to lead by example is essential. Likewise, you’ll need to communicate effectively with brewery employees. Other management experience is a plus.

    * A degree from a recognized brewing school in Brewing Science is preferred. We also prefer you to have at least a bachelor’s degree in a field relevant to brewing or brewhouse management, such as chemistry, engineering, mathematics, or biology. The more production brewery experience, the less emphasis we will place on academic qualifications.

    ABILITIES AND SKILLS

    * Must be fluent in Microsoft Office. The position will require careful record-keeping and accurate projections, so Excel fluency is especially important.

    * Must be able to consistently lift at least 55 lbs. over head.

    * Must be able to operate a forklift.

    * Must be able to work a flexible work schedule.

    * Must be able to climb stairs and ladders.
