  • Vent fan for mill room?

    Hey guys,

Was looking for an exhaust fan for our mill room and wanted to see if there was something in particular we should/shouldn't be looking for.

    Much thanks in advance!

Calculate your ft/3 of the room and compare that to the CFM of the fan. Then decide how often you want the room to empty- a hvac guy can give you a number, im still working on my coffee this morning and would have to look it up. Louvers would be good to prevent back flow when its not on. Remember everything in a mill room has to be 'explosion proof' to pass code. And you STILL should wear a dust mask.

Vents are made for the air into & out of the room that have an auto closing mechanism (like a thin lead wire that melts under heat and shuts a gate), that way if the room does have a fire, the air supply is cut off.

We have an explosion proof fan that sits on top of a rubber pad (to keep vibrations down) on our grain room's roof, then vents out thru an exterior wall. It's pretty much like a furnace fan, but the motor is separate from the air flow.

All our electrical switches are on the outside of the room, on a relay that starts the mill and auger at the same time so you don't forget to start the auger.

The mill's motor is explosion proof and its all grounded properly.

As always, check local codes and what the fire inspector wants to see before doing the work.
