  • paying/hiring a salesman?

Any suggestions on best method of paying a salesman/deliveryguy.
I want to avoid wasting fuel costs, wasting hourly costs on an unmonitored employee. Hourly+ Commission?, salary+ comm, just commission?

    Hint: pay peanuts, get monkeys.

Otherwise, a base + commission + gas + cell phone is pretty standard. If he/she can't pay his/her bills with your base/commission combination, things will not go well for anybody.

The pay structure will depend in part on what job duties are assigned and the mix of sales and delivery duties. Somebody who spends 90% of their time unloading a van is going to have a hard time earning a living with a pay structure that's primarily commission. You also need to think about how skilled the person needs to be in sales. The greater the amount of sales and opportunity to earn commission the greater the compensation will need to be to attract applicants with sales skills. If you just need somebody who can deliver beer and then try to sell an extra keg on the spot then you can pay a lot less than somebody who needs to be able to spend several hours on premises selling the beer to patrons and in turn getting the bar manager or owner to commit to increasing orders.
