  • Head Brewer for New Brewery in Portland, OR

    Fat Head's Brewery & Saloon is coming to downtown Portland, slated for a summer 2014 opening. We have been awarded numerous awards for our craft beers, including the Great American Beer Festival, World Beer Cup and two time National IPA Grand Champion. As we plan to bring our great craft beers to Portland we are looking for a Head Brewer who is passionate about craft brewing and skilled at inspiring and coaching others to be the same. The Head Brewer will be responsible for the entire beer making process, including selection of ingredients, creating beer recipes, overseeing the mixing of ingredients and the fermentation process and for ensuring the highest of quality standards. Additional responsibilities include:
    • Manage all operations of the brewery, including the work of all brewers and other brewery staff
    • Create & maintain all written facility policies, beer production standards and procedures
    • Create and adhere to brewing facility annual budgets
    • Recruit, train and develop brewery staff and back-up staff
    • Plan for and prepare all work schedules for all brewery staff based upon production needs and labor cost targets/budgets
    • Maintain brewery building & equipment using proper operating, preventative maintenance and cleaning/sanitation procedures
    • Utilize creative skills to develop & design new beers
    • Ensure all safety policies & procedures are followed, regular safety training is conducted and address all safety hazards immediately
    • Ensure correct inventory levels are maintained for all raw and finished products
    • Establish & lead the regular beer tasting panel for product evaluation and staff development
    • Participate in brewery/saloon festivals and promotional events

    Requirements
    • Minimum of three (3) years production brewery/brewing experience
    • College degree in brewing science or brewing related field and/or degree coursework from an accredited brewing school is preferred
    • Strong technical knowledge of all aspects of the brewing process
    • Strong mechanical understanding of the entire brewing process and all related equipment
    • Must be able to work a flexible schedule, including weekends as needed during peak business times
    • Must be highly motivated, self-directed and results and quality driven
    • Must have strong organizational skills and possess excellent attention to detail
    • Solid skills with basic mathematical computations and have basic computer functions knowledge, including MS Office
    • Professional verbal and written communication skills
    • Requires the completion of at least a high school education, a valid driver's license, a satisfactory background check and the ability to meet the physical demands of the position with or without accommodation
