  • where do importers distributing domestic brands fit in to the distribution structure?

I'm curious about how it works when importers sell domestic beer brands: for example, Jolly Pumpkin is distributed by Shelton Brothers, and Stillwater and Against the Grain are distributed by 12%.

Do these breweries sell their product to the importer, and then the importer sells to distributors around the country, who sells to the retailer? Or does the importer sell directly to the retailer?

Do domestic breweries picked up by an importer have a local distributor that they sell to, in addition to the importer who takes the product further afield? Or does all the beer in their local market go to the importer first, then the local distributor?

What's the difference between an importer and a distributor really? Do they have different legal rights and powers? Do their contracts with breweries tend to look different from one another?

Confused about this whole thing. Thanks for any clarification you can provide.
