  • Bold brewer wanted for 4-6 month Peruvian mission. Safety NOT guaranteed...

    Hello,

We are a start-up brew pub looking to open late 2014 this year looking for a head brewer. We are looking for a highly intelligent and detail oriented brewer with the perfect mix of responsibility, weirdness, artistic expression, introversion, and a grateful soul looking to break out of the American over saturated brewing scene and blaze a bright new trail in an emerging market still in diapers…Peru. It will not be easy. We are finding money. The pay will be low (but livable), the hours will be long and Peru has a way of sucking out your soul with its crafty and confusing ways if you are not careful. English is not widely spoken and sometimes you want to scream because it seems your life has taken a detour through the Twilight Zone driving by hose after hose shooting water into the air, wasting water for hours, advertising a car wash district coming down a mountain, or you may turn down a street and see a gang of cowboys dressed head to toe in bright purple with sleigh bells all up the sides of their boots drinking in the streets dancing, and soy milk is just regular milk introducing itself. It's never boring... My name is Casey Workman. I’m 37 and an international wanderer living in Peru with my lovely Peruvian wife. We are settling here. I was born and raised in Portland, Oregon in and around our amazing brewing culture. I am in the process of bringing Oregon’s microbrew culture to Peru. They have never seen anything like it. They will love it…snow capped mountains all around at 7,638 ft. I have experience homebrewing but a little limited to start up a brewery by myself. We are securing funding and are in the late planning stages. Business plan has been written. We will be starting Grateful Brewing in Arequipa, Peru late 2014.This is where the head brewer comes in.

Arequipa is a beautiful city with over a million people. It boasts 300 days of sun per year (Oregonians) with temperatures between 55 and 77 degrees year round. It has mountain climbing, canyon exploring (deepest in the world), mountain biking, and some of the best white water rafting in Peru all within a day trip. Perfect adventure playground ripe for the craft brewing culture. It is the second biggest city in Peru (after Lima) and the second most visited (after Cusco). Peru’s economy is the second fastest growing in the world (after China) and the city is virtually untapped from a microbrew standpoint. The market is perfect. There are about 8 other micro brewing operations in other parts of Peru and they can’t brew enough. We just had our first Peruvian microbrewers meeting last week. Everyone is super excited and helpful. The positive beer culture translates very well into Spanish. You could be there for the birth of a national craft brewing movement…not fighting for your spot amongst hundreds of others in the states. I am looking for a brewer with awesome skills, great attention to detail, an unwavering positive attitude, and an adventurous spirit. Living in Peru is not easy if you are used to certain comforts. Your patience is tested daily with problems that pop up that are just not fair. Life isn’t fair. The brewer I am looking for will be prepared for that and be able to roll with the punches. Big egos, negative, energy sucking people addicted to American comforts, unwilling to learn and be flexible need not apply.

What I offer in exchange is a chunk of life you will never forget. NEVER! Unless you get Alzheimer's disease. My wife and I will be here to fully support the move into this strange and fascinating land. Filled with growth, enrichment, learning a different language, and a ton of latinas/os falling all over your North Western novelty (geeks raise your cool factor by +100 experience points just for being from the states or abroad.)… Also, we would be covering your room/board and a modest (livable) salary. The idea would be for a head brewer to come down for 4-6 months to help us kick off the brew pub and then see how the fit is from both sides after that time.

I think we are looking for a single brewer but we would be willing to entertain the idea of a couple situation if it is a fit we can’t pass up.

If you are bored with the day in day out predictability of the “American dream” you may have found this post for a reason. Here at Grateful Brewing we deeply believe in the idea that things happen for a reason there is no such thing as good or bad. They are all just steps on your journey. Living in Latin America (Costa Rica and now Peru) for a dozen years has taught me life changing lessons you can't get in the same state or worse, zipcode where you were born. If you find this post calling to you maybe you should listen. If you are looking for a life changing experience starting up an art driven, Oregon influenced brewpub with a pretty awesome couple filled with tons of room for innovation, creativity, and living every single day... using countless fruits and ingredients found nowhere else in the world this may be just your cup… Please email me at gratefulbrewing@gmail.com.
