    JOB TITLE: Quality Manager
    LOCATION: Comstock Brewery
    REPORTS TO: Director of Operations
    POSITION TYPE: Full-time, Salary
    EXTERNAL POSTING DATES: 03/28/2014- 4/20/2014

    POSITION SUMMARY: Provides the direction and supervision that builds and sustains a world-class, safety-driven, high-performing and diverse Quality culture.

    ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: include the following.
    •Adheres to and advances the “Safety Always” culture of Bell’s Brewery.
    •Successfully builds rapport, respect and camaraderie, both inter- and intra-departmentally, through exceptional coaching, teambuilding and training.
    •Leads meetings of direct reports to ensure effective communication throughout the department and company as a whole.
    •Responsible for the scheduling and managing of all Quality/Lab employees.
    •Establishes key performance indicators and associated feedback processes to assess Quality/Labs departments' performance against standards and objectives.
    •Works to assure that effective planning and communication process for brewery operations are promoted throughout the Bells organization.
    •Consults regularly with and supports the Beer Production and Beer Packaging departments to promote Quality.
    •Is informed about, educates on, and implements industry best practices.
    •Champions continuous improvement efforts and supports process improvement initiatives across all departments.
    •Ensures that the quality focus is integral to all aspects of brewery operations.
    •Works to ensure that all Quality-related systems are validated and/or standardized.
    •Establishes and tracks key performance and quality indicators to provide feedback processes that assure our beer meets quality standards.
    •Develops and updates Quality Manual.
    •Ensures that relevant records and reports are developed, analyzed, distributed and maintained for quality improvement and regulatory purposes.
    •Manages, oversees and maintains sensory panel program.
    •Provides assurance that raw materials are validated and/or standardized.
    •Investigates and responds to consumer complaints.
    •Development, implementation and support of GMP, HACCP, and Product Recall programs.
    •Ensures that the Laboratory areas are organized, clean and sanitary.
    •Occasional Travel required.

    Additional duties may be assigned as necessary.

    SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
    •Supervises all Quality and Laboratory Operations.
    •Manages six (6) direct reports, including Lab Team Members and Senior Scientist.

    •Must possess a valid driver’s license

    MATERIALS/MACHINES/EQUIPMENT USED:
    •Brewing Laboratory analytical equipment.
    •Cleaning agents, sanitizing agents, microbiological media, organic solvents, and other hazardous laboratory chemicals, including some carcinogens.
    •Compressed air or other gasses, including CO2
    •Desktop computer & Company Phone
    •Company Vehicle

    IMPORTANT SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
    •Working knowledge of brewing, beer, and packaging processes.
    •Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
    •Ability to address and manage diverse groups.
    •A high level of professionalism.
    •Excellent statistical analysis skills.
    •Organizational skills: must be able to efficiently multi-task and prioritize.
    •Strong computer skills (MS Office Suite).
    •The ability to safely handle reagents and other potentially hazardous chemicals.
    •An understanding of the critical role of sanitation in the brewing process.

    THE IDEAL CANDIDATE WILL POSSESS:
    •Minimum of 5 years of QA/QC experience, preferably in a brewery or an industry regulated by the FDA.
    •Must have a minimum of three (3) years in supervisory/management role.
    •A Bachelors Degree in Chemistry, Microbiology, Food Science, Fermentation or related field.
    •Advanced degree or equivalent experience is preferred. Brewing education from a recognized institution is preferred.
    •Prior experience with following:
    ocGMPs and HACCP
    oSix Sigma
    oProcess validation techniques
    oStatistical process control
    oGeneration, interpretation, analysis, and communication of data
    oFlavor panel experience with formalized training

    •While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally required to sit for long periods of time.

    WORK ENVIRONMENT: The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job.
    •Work is primarily performed in a shared office environment with frequent trips to operational areas required.
    •The work environment is that of a brewing and packaging facility
    •The employee frequently must work in a sterile environment.
    •The noise level in the packaging facilities is frequently loud (80+ dB)
    •The employee handles hazardous materials.
    •The employee works near moving mechanical parts.
    •The employee works on wet floors and with wet equipment.
    •Occasional Travel required
