Hey all. Just finishing our piecemeal 7 bbl system. I need some advise in sizing pumps for our system. Any standard size for 7 bbl systems?

For a 7 BBL brewhouse a 1 HP pump should be fine

but if you plan on double batching and getting 15 BBL fermenters then I would suggest a 1 1/2 HP pump.

Don't for get to order high temperature seals.

I'm in a similar situation with cobbing together a 10 bb system and am trying to determine the size and also number of pumps needed for brewing, transfer to FVs, CIP, etc. Is it common to have 1 portable pump on a cart to handle all of it?

Hi Adam,

I have see a few breweries managing to run with only one pump but it is difficult and slows things down quite a bit. You will probably want at least one brew house pump and one portable pump. I would suggest 1 HP for the brewhouse pump and 1 1/2 HP for the portable pump.

Thanks very much! For the brew house pump, is it typically hard mounted centrally between the HLT, MT and brew kettle? Thinking now about the split between hard piping and using brewer's hose.

I would go with two portable pumps, and trust me, it's worth buying new if that's what it takes to get them with interchangeable seal kits.

Get a VFD for at least one of them, and it's worth getting a separate sparge pump IMHO.
