  • Help with hot and cold liquor tanks

For those that double or triple brew using hot and cold liquor tanks, what do you do with the hot water from the wort chilling? Do you send it to the hot liquor tank? Can the hot liquor tank recover in time for the next mash/sparge session?
    Any help please!

Returning hot liquor from the heat exchanger should be directed to the hot liquor tank. You should be able to knock out in 30 minutes and see this liquor at around 80C. More than hot enough for mashing in. Your volume of hot liquor should be about 120% of batch size. If your heat exchanger can't do this, your equipment supplier sold you an undersized heat exchanger. Take a look at your flow/temperature profile in the data sheets that should have accompanied your heat exchanger. Or call the manufacturer to seek a solution. Perhaps you could add plates. Good luck!

We always sent the hot water from the heat exchanger to the HLT, and as soon as it covered the steam panels, we'd turn the heat on to get it up to boiling (which it did pretty darn fast!).

        Hot Liquor

I have mine set up so that the hot liquor from heat exchanger can go either to the tank or the floor(dump). Ours is big enough already for two brews, the hot liqour from first mainly gets dumped so as not to affect temp. in tank--or sometimes it is just full!
