  • Lid size for plastic conicals

A rotomoulding company has agreed to do a custom run of simple, made-to-order HDPE conical vessels for our new brewery (plastic conicals aren't really available here in NZ, and shipping from overseas is very expensive.) They'll be about 750mm (30in) diameter.

One detail I'm currently debating is the size of the lid. We can get a full diameter slip-on lid, or have an inset, screw-on lid like these tanks that are commonly used in North America.

The bigger lid sounds convenient, because it would make it very easy to inspect the vessel, and even flip it upside down and give it a cleaning with a soft cloth if necessary. However it might lead to leakage during CIP, and there'll be no option of pressurizing the tank, even just up to 2 or 3 PSI. So we'd have to do all our transfers to the brite tank with our diaphragm pump.

The smaller lid could take a gasket so as to be a tight fit during CIP, and to allow a bit of pressure. But would make it much tougher to get at the insides of the tank.

If you use plastic conicals now, which sounds better to you?

You are correct. The screw on lids do not seal. It is little bit of pain but livable. You should use CIP for cleaning. Usually plastic clean quite nice.
