  • Smelly US-05 beer during fermenation

I had the beer tested. Any one else have issues with US-05 dry yeast?

Here are the results we got:

LCSM(wild yeast media): 1 colony of growth. After looking at it under the microscope, it didn't look like wild yeast but pretty standard. Normally wild yeast will get elongated, but this didn't look off.

SDA aerobic: about 40 colonies, Gram positive catalase positive, rods. This is sounding like a non-beer spoiler bacillus.

SDA Anaerobic: 1 colony, Gram (+) catalase(+) rods. Clearly not happy in the anaerobic environment.

HLP(selective for pediococcus and lactobacillus): no growth

Hope this helps you. From the growth we got it doesn't look like a beer spoiler.
    Cheers,

US 05 was really finicky for us for some reason. It was definitely smelly compared to our American ale 1 we get from BSI. And for no apparent reason a small batch of pumpkin beer turned out totally solventy when fermented with us 05. I won't use the stuff any more but I know lots of breweries/home brewers swear by it. We started operations with us 05 and switched long ago because of the issues we were having. Now ordering pitchable rates from BSI
