View Full Version : How Much Glycol

I'm trying to determine how much glycol I need to order. Our chiller has a 100 gallon capacity, so assuming a 35-65 mixture, that comes out to 35 gallons of glycol. But how do I account for the piping and jackets that take up additional space?

Piping volume is easy to calculate. Tank jacket volume might not be. If you can't figure out the jacket volume, fill one with water and let it drain into buckets. Measure how much it held.

And given your options are 5 gallons of glycol for about $125 or a 55 gallon drum of glycol for about $900...the answer is 55 gallons of glycol.

Yeah, get the 55 gallon drum. It's always a good idea to have some extra glycol around. The way to do it is to half-fill your system and start it circulating through everything with the chiller off. Then add the glycol to get the right mixture and top it up at the same time.

There can and most likely will be situations that you do not plan on which involve the loss of some or a large amount of your system glycol.
You always need extra on hand, even when everything is bullet proof, because anything can happen.
