    Ornery Beer Company & Public House is looking for an experienced Head Brewer who is searching for an opportunity to move up and lead a new brewery.

    Ornery Beer Company will bring a casual brewpub experience to Northern Virginia. Northern Virginia has a number of outstanding and award winning "polished casual” brewpubs, what we do not have is the casual brewpub which dots the craft beer landscape throughout the nation. Ornery Beer Company & Public House will be that pub. We will serve pub focused food done well, but what we will have most is a Fun, Relaxing, Craft Beer focused experience led by our distinct selection of ales & lagers representing the best of American, Belgian, and German styles. We are renovating and expanding our existing restaurant in Woodbridge, Va to create our new brand.

    We are seeking an experienced & accomplished brewer to lead our brewery operations and propel Ornery Beer Company into a successful member of the burgeoning Virginia Craft Brewing scene.

    A 2 vessel 15 bbl Specific Mechanical system has been ordered, which will include five 30bbl fermenters, 8 15bbl serving tanks, and room for future expansion. Renovations on the existing restaurant will begin soon. At nearly 12,000 ft, we will include a covered patio with draft service & rollup doors, 50+ seat racetrack bar, lots of community tables, couches in a lounge setting, as well as a separate dining room.

    Woodbridge, Virginia is located along the Potomac River in Prince William County, about 20 miles outside Washington DC. Prince William has the 12th highest median income in the United States but we enjoy a significantly lower housing and cost of living than neighboring areas. This translates to more beer money to spend! It also means a great standard of living for it’s residents and quality of schools.

    My background includes 15 years owning & operating multiple full service, craft beer focused restaurants in the Northern Virginia area as well as an founder, board member, and operations consultant with Mad Fox Brewing Company in Falls Church Va. I am a life long restaurant operator and craft beer fan who turned my passion into a core part of my professional life. What I am not is the brewer. We are looking for the right person to lead Ornery Beer Company and be an integral piece to our brewpub identity. We will work hard but we will have great fun doing it, enjoy being an active part of the local brewing community, travel to all BA and other events, and create a brand and culture that we will all be proud of.

    Financing is secured, brewery equipment has been ordered. Permitting will be starting soon. Timing for this position is approximately 2-3 months with brewing operations likely beginning in late Q1 2015.

    To be the right fit for the Head Brewer must embrace the brewpub model & experience, being integral to not only the brewing operations but also assisting in the training and development of the restaurant staff and the business itself. In return, the Head Brewer will have the opportunity to be a leading and integral part in the development of the new concept, lead the development of our beer program & selections, as well as a formative member of the senior management team. The brewmaster will be a key partner in creating and developing our brand.

    Minimum Qualifications
    • 5 years commercial brewing experience
    • 3 years Head Brewer w/minimum 600 bbl volume
    • In depth knowledge & experience in budgetary processes
    • Experience managing all federal & state regulatory requirements including paperwork filings.
    • Brewing experience in a brewpub environment
    • Experience leading a brewery from grain to glass, up to and including draft equipment/service management.
    • Experience leading all brewing operations, including:
    - Successful recipe development
    - Material ordering, contract management & vendor management
    - Yeast propagation and management
    - Leading a meticulous brewery cleaning & sanitation program
    - Equipment maintenance programs
    • Ability to effectively identify and resolve beer production and quality concerns.
    • Successful history with American, Belgian, and German style ales & lagers.
    • Experience managing a multiple brewer team
    • Being a meticulous brewer driven for exceptional beer
    • History of good judgment, communication skills, people skills, and organization
    • Driven to a great job without managed supervision.


    Additional Job Duties will include, but are not limited to:
    • Organizing and attending off site events
    • Assisting in the development and execution of beer training systems for the restaurant team
    • Developing and conducting brewery tours
    • Assisting in the development and execution of on-site events and promotions
    • Embracing a Tasting Panel process and using feedback to elevate and improve the guest experience.
    • Work collaboratively with the business and management in developing consumer driven and concept driven core, seasonal, and other selections
    • Developing brewing calendar and schedules to achieve planned core & seasonal selections.
    • All the physical and time demands of not only brewing, but brewing in a start up environment.
    • And….everything else….All things beer and brewing in a new brewpub!

    • Brewing recognition through regional and/or national awards
    • Formal brewing education or commensurate achievement/experience in their brewing career.
    • 5+ years Head Brewer experience independently leading a medium to large scale successful brewing team
    • Experience managing both brewpub operations and wholesale distribution
    • Souring experience

    Our 5 year goals:
    • Developing multiple outdoor events at our location.
    • Wholesale draft distribution to the extent of the brewery capacity.
    • Expand the brewing operations to include a souring program, possibly including open fermentation.
    • Expanding into an additional location(s).
    • Developing a regional Craft Beer Festival along the I-95 corridor.
