  • Reusing 1" copper pipe for glycol

Our newly-leased building has a few hundred feet of 1" copper that was used for compressed air from an oiled compressor. We're hoping we can reuse the copper for our glycol loop but we're concerned about any possible contamination from its previous use. Any advice? Thanks.

We had a leak from a heat exchanger on our refrigeration system into our HL system. This filled our HL system with refrigerant oils, which were retained in the calcite deposits within the plumbing. Alternating washes with caustic and then acid, several repeats, removed the oils and calcite. The trick is that the oil prevents the acid from dissolving the calcite, and the calcite prevents the caustic from reaching the oil. Since your lines presumably have no calcite deposits, your task should be much easier--especially as there will be no contact with your product. A couple of flushes with pH 11 caustic should remove most or all of the oil.
