  • Brewmaster -- NEW ENGLAND

Aeronaut is hiring a brewmaster to oversee operations, expansion, and recipe design in its 8.5 bbl Somerville, MA brewery. Brewmaster will lead recipe design in close connection with collaborating farmers and our house-laboratory, taking responsibility for all aspects of brewhouse, cellaring and packaging operations.

    About Aeronaut
Aeronaut is a rapidly growing young brewery launched in June 2014 in Union Square in Somerville, Massachusetts. We’ve taken over a 12,000 square foot factory space which we additionally operate as an incubator for start-ups in food, farming, and microbiology. We’re looking for an extraordinary brewmaster to take the reins of recipe design and brewing at Aeronaut and continue to drive a fast moving program of beer design and iteration already fully underway and closely connected in-house yeast laboratory.

    Aeronaut Brewery
Beer is our first love and Aeronaut Brewery is the anchor of our project. Our brewhouse is a beautiful 8.5BBL, ABT-manufactured electric beast plugged into municipal water by 800,000 BTUs of instant-on gas water heating. The brewhouse feeds roughly 100 barrels of production fermentation capacity and is run alongside our own custom-fabricated “Alpha Ruby”: a one-barrel gas-fired prototype brewing system. We’ve brewed dozens of recipes and currently keep between five and eight lines on at all times in our adjacent taproom. All of our beer is packaged in kegs and served as quickly as it can be produced. We have a canning line on site which has not yet been turned on.

Roles and goals of the brewmaster
Aeronaut is looking for a brewmaster to oversee growth and maturation of the project and keep us ahead of rapidly rising customer demand. Brewmaster will be invited to join us full-time in Fall 2014 to
    1. head our brewery staff as a fully participatory leader in the trenches. The brewmaster will be responsible for brewing our beers and ensuring that they remain in stock.
    2. design and implement expansion and efficiency improvements in our brewery,
    3. develop new recipes in cooperation with Aeronaut staff, yeast lab, hub tenants, and farmers

The brewmaster position will entail a wide range of opportunities for collaboration and career development including travel, education, and constant prototyping alongside production brews.

    Requirements of the position
Five years experience as a production brewer. We’ll look for rapid fluency operating our brew system.
Mechanical aptitude attested to by references. Things break and you’ll be responsible for fixing them..
Recipe design experience. If you come in for an interview we’ll ask you to bring samples.
Flexibility. Aeronaut is a dynamic environment and the brewmaster should be adaptable in scheduling and methodology.
Leadership experience. Brewmaster should be ready to lead a rapidly growing brewhouse team.
