  • Oat malts

I've been scouring the interwebs and the forums for some info on this. Fawcett Oat Malt, will it convert, and is it possible to convert the Simpson Naked Golden Oats (this one I doubt) without use of a cereal mash? Are their other companies that produce an oat malt?

    Thanks!

I believe the answer is yes, Fawcett Oat Malt, no, Simpsons Golden Naked. Ask your malt supplier for a malt analysis sheet for the specific malt. Your looking for "Diastatic Power", above 40° Lintner and your good to go.

The Golden Naked Oats will convert if you have enough enzymes in the mash. The flaking process of the oats gelatinizes the starch and makes it available to be broken down. It just doesn't contain any enzymes of its own. Oats also have high levels of Beta-Glucans that don't break down during the mash.
