    Brewery Operations Manager – Pelican Brewing Company, Pacific City, Oregon

    About the Opportunity

    Pelican Brewing Company operates a production brewery in Tillamook, Oregon and an ocean-front brewpub just 22 miles south of Tillamook in Pacific City, Oregon. Celebrating its 18th year, Pelican Brewing Company has won over 300 medals as one of the world’s most decorated breweries, most recently winning Small Brewery of the Year at the 2014 World Beer Cup and Large Brewpub of the Year at the 2013 Great American Beer Festival. The production brewery opened in fall of 2013 and will produce 8500 barrels of beer in 2014 with projections to double that production in 2015 and continue an aggressive growth curve into 2016 and beyond. Pelican beer is currently distributed in Oregon, Washington, Idaho, and Utah with plans to bring on additional markets as capacity increases.

    The Brewery Operations Manager has full responsibility for all brewery production, packaging, and shipping at the Pelican Brewing Company. This includes production, brewery maintenance, capital improvements, and people management. The Brewery Operations Manager is also the leader of the Brewery Team and is responsible for leading, recruiting, developing, and retaining the talent necessary for aggressive growth. The position is based at the Tillamook Brewery and reports to the CEO.


    Accountabilities:

    • Ensure all brewery employees and procedures meet Pelican Brewing Company safety standards.
    • Responsible for all aspects of brewing operations, including utilities, raw materials, safety, personnel and training and maintenance.
    • Works closely with the Sales and Distribution Manager to coordinate brewing schedule with production and new product development needs
    • Perform brewery audits to ensure consistency and repeatability of brewing
    • Manages/conducts quality checks, process audits to ensure adherence to PBC quality standards
    • Develop reports on brewing execution, quality and exceptions. Put systems in place to improve process controls
    • Initiates and implements capital projects related to above, and to ongoing needs of PBC
    • Responsible for sanitation of the brew house and cellars to assure compliance
    • Provide timely update on process and formulation, material utilization etc. to PBC finance contact
    • Recruit, hire, supervise and review performance of direct reports and develop staff professionally and technically to meet goals
    • Providing direction and mentoring to and/or supervising other technical professionals on staff
    • Staying current with technical Brewing literature and information about sensory evaluation

    Education and Experience:

    • BS in Food Science, Chemistry, Biochemistry, or other discipline or equivalent experience.
    • 3-5 years of manufacturing or operations experience.
    • Must possess the technical ability to work in a lab and production scale Brewing environments
    • Must have project management skills and be able to work under tight timelines
    • Must have an entrepreneurial mindset
    • Must be highly organized and able to prioritize tasks in order to meet deadlines
    • Demonstrated ability to analyze and problem solve
    • Must enjoy working in a cross-functional environment
    • Must have a strong desire for results and ability to bring projects to completion
