  • Yeast Storage and Propagation

I'm in the process of making myself a lab and learning how to store, colonize, isolate and propagate yeast, so I have some questions.

Can someone please explain to me how I get the yeast from my FV, and streak a plate with the yeast to keep, and build a starter from later? Do I just dip my sanitized inoculation loop into the yeast then streak a plate?

When I streak a plate, how can I tell if the colony is pure with no outside contams?

If I want yeast from a bottle of beer, what is the best thing to have with me to capture and store yeast? (I'm going to Belgium in the summer, and want to be able to get yeasts from a bunch of different beers while I"m there and bring them home, so they will not be refrigerated).

I'm planning on having about 3 yeast strains kicking around for all my beers.

I encourage you to pick up a copy of Chris White's yeast book. It will answer all of your questions.
