TITLE: Packaging Manager
STATUS: Full-time, Exempt
REPORTS TO: Head Brewer
THE BIG PICTURE
The Modern Times Packaging Manager oversees the team and equipment that puts our beer into its various packages. From kegs to bottles to cans, the package types that Modern Times takes to market continues to grow and evolve, and the Packaging Manager will ensure that rigorously high standards for our beer are consistently met across all the board. S/He will also work hand in hand with the Head Brewer to schedule the packaging team, perform maintenance on all packaging equipment, and maintain accurate inventories on all raw packaging materials and finished goods. Candidates must share Modern Times’ commitments to quality, safety, business ethics, and continuous innovation.
THE EVERYDAY VIEW
- Manage a team of direct reports on kegging, bottling, and canning lines
- Supervise packaging technicians during daily operation of our rotary 16oz can filler, 22oz Meheen and gravity filler
- Manage keg washing and filling
- Responsible for hiring, training, and evaluating packaging personnel
- Manage daily operational aspects of packaging
- Schedule packaging staff
- Inventory management for packaging materials
- Responsible for team's proper and timely packaging of beer
- Coordinate palletizing of finished product and warehousing
- Oversee cleaning, upkeep, maintenance of packaging area
- Schedule and conduct maintenance of packaging equipment
- Coordinate with Head Brewer to create weekly packaging schedule
- Maintain a daily log of packaging operations.
- Oversee and maintain packaging department's quality control standards
- Enforces brewery safety protocols and SOPs
- Perform QA/QC utilizing seam inspection equipment and dissolved oxygen meter
- Operate forklift and/or other material handling equipment as needed
- Collaborate with fellow brewery staff on organization, cleanliness, QC, and general process refinement
- Other tasks as needed
DESIRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE
- Three or more years of packaging brewery experience; specific functional experience in operation of beverage packaging equipment
- Previous supervisory experience preferred
- Forklift certification required
- Ability to work a schedule of (5) full 8-hour (or longer) workdays per week, with the flexibility to occasionally work nights or weekends as needed
- Highly organized individual who will take pride in maintaining a clean, well-functioning packaging area
- Excellent communications skills: this position requires constant coordination with Operations and Brewery staff
- Must have a clean driving record
PHYSICAL AND MENTAL REQUIREMENTS
- Ability to lift heavy objects to shoulder height
- Ability to regularly lift, push, or pull up to 175 pounds
- Ability to track, organize, & schedule countless packaging projects throughout the year
BACKGROUND AND MOTOR VEHICLE RECORD CHECK REQUIREMENTS
- Candidates must successfully pass a general background check
- Candidates must successfully pass a Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) check, since driving is a component of this position

Modern Times is a 30bbl production brewery in the Point Loma neighborhood of San Diego, with anticipated production of 19,000bbls in 2015. Modern Times is named after a beautifully crazy utopian community founded in 1850, and (almost) all of our beers are named after real utopian experiments or mythological utopias.
