  • How much yeast?

    Hi,

I would like to have an idea about how much yeast is needed for a 10bbl batch.

I have an idea about billion cells but I would like to have an idea about which is the volume pitched for a 10bbl fermentation.

Could anyone give an estimate based on their experience?

Is this something that I could buy from the suppliers?

Will they send me a barrel or container with the cell count that I need?

    Thank you!

    Odin.

Yes, the yeast supplier that you order from will send you the pitch size you need based on the volume of your batch and the original gravity of the wort. Call them, and they'll talk you through it and give you pricing.

0.75 to one million cells per mL of beer per degree Plato OG.

        exactly,

        (12ºP)(750,000 for most ales)(37,854mL)
        3.4E11 cells to use.

or if you have 350ml of yeast say the cell count needs to be 9.7E8 or almost 1E9 which is a very good to aim for.
        I hope I encouraged you!

          Not nearly enough....

Correct me if I'm wrong, but my math.....
10bbl = 1,174 liters. So the equation should read:
          1.174 e3 * 12 * 7.50 e5 = 1.06 e10
Which is to say 10 times as much. A billion just isn't that much!

yep but it needs to be in mL not L, I thought I saw 10 gal not 10bbl

            so it would be

            (1.17E6)(12)(750000)= 1.06E13 cells to use
